Moscow to take corresponding measures in response to the expansion of NATO towards Russian borders

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said that the Moscow would continue to take corresponding measures in response, especially as NATO keeps expanding its military infrastructure towards Russia’s borders.NATO’s Steadfast Defender 2024 that kicked off in Europe last week present a threat to Russia’s national security, Peskov said.

The exercises, hailed to be the largest NATO has held in decades, are said to involve some 90,000 troops from all 31 member states as well as Sweden and will last for several months, ultimately ending in May, according to the bloc’s Supreme Allied Commander for Europe Christopher Cavoli. It’s also noted that some 1,100 combat vehicles, including 133 tanks and 533 infantry fighting vehicles, as well as over 50 naval vessels and 80 helicopters, drones and fighter jets are set to take part in the exercises.

Peskov also said that NATO has always been intended as a “instrument of confrontation” that is controlled by Washington. The alliance, in fact, was conceived, formed, configured and is currently managed by the United States precisely as an instrument of confrontation. This instrument continues to fulfill its role and, of course, it is a threat to us,” the Kremlin spokesperson said.

The launch of NATO’s military drills come as a number of officials from its member countries, including the UK, Germany, and Estonia, have been urging the bloc to prepare for a full-scale military confrontation with Russia in the near future, suggesting that Moscow had plans to attack Europe in the next few decades.

Russia has vehemently denied any such plans, calling the claims a “hoax.” Russian President Vladimir Putin has insisted that Moscow “has no interest … geopolitically, economically or militarily … in waging war against NATO” and would instead prefer to develop a relationship with the US-led bloc.

Khan, who was ousted as prime minister by the opposition in 2022, is already serving a three-year prison sentence on corruption charges. He has said that all these cases are politically motivated against him.

The court also ordered the couple to pay a fine of around 1.5 billion Pakistani rupees (£4.2 million; $5.3 million). It is mentioned that there is no problem for the market as the demand of clothing for government employees including the Nepali Army will be available within the country and the industry meets the demand.

The report has also determined the necessity and justification of the re-operation of the industry. According to which, re-operation of the industry will maintain the industrial sector of the past and will contribute significantly to the development of the country’s industrial sector and gross domestic product. The Iran-backed movement, based in Yemen, said it targeted the Marlin Luanda in response to “American-British aggression”.The US and UK have launched air strikes on Houthi targets in response to attacks on ships in the Red Sea region.

Trafigura said all crew were safe and that the fire in a cargo tank had been put out.

Houthi rebels have claimed they carried out the strike on the ship. The Islamist group, which controls a large part of Yemen, has been attacking vessels crossing the vital waterway between the Red Sea and the Suez Canal since the escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict, in what it claims is a show of solidarity with the Palestinians. Amid the attacks, many shipping companies have suspended travel in the region.

US to deploy nuclear weapons to UK

The United States is planning to deploy nuclear weapons to the UK for the first time in 15 years, The Telegraph reported, citing Pentagon documents. However, US defense official had neither confirmed nor denied the reports.

The report comes amid heightened tensions between NATO and Russia over the Ukraine conflict, and calls from some Western politicians to prepare for a potential armed clash with Moscow.

The British newspaper cited procurement contracts for a new facility at the Royal Air Force station at Lakenheath in Suffolk, which point to Washington’s intention to bring nuclear weapons to the base. RAF Lakenheath is expected to house B61-12 bombs that are three times more powerful than those dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, the Telegraph said. The US sent F-35 nuclear-capable fighters to the base last year.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said last year that Moscow would be compelled to enact “compensatory countermeasures” if American nuclear warheads were to return to Britain. Russia has accused the West of stoking tensions in Europe and maintains that the eastward expansion of NATO is one of the root causes of the Ukraine conflict.

High-ranking European officials, including German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, have spoken of the need to brace for a potential war with Russia. Last week the chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, urged the bloc to be “readier across the whole spectrum” for direct confrontation.

The head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergey Naryshkin, dismissed the claims that Moscow was planning an offensive against NATO as “information warfare” aimed at justifying “hybrid aggression.”

We will seriously review the alliance with Congress: Barshman Pun

While training the Maoist representatives and district level leaders in home district Rolpa, Pun commented that the Congress has lost their trust.

He said that in every election, they vote for the Congress honestly, but the process of being cheated by the Congress is repeating.

A new turn has come in national politics with the results of the National Assembly election of Koshi province. We have reached the point where we have to seriously review the alliance with the Congress”, Pun said, “what is the loss or profit for us politically from the alliance with the Congress? How long will it last if we continue to vote for Congress honestly in every election and Congress keeps betraying.

Earlier, in various cases, the Congress leadership used to point to factionalism and power struggle within the party as the reason. Pun recalled that two years ago, the Congress was dishonest by not voting for the candidate in the National Assembly from Koshi. Pun also said that the Congress betrayed Kedar Karki by making him the Chief Minister of Koshi in an alliance with the UML, contrary to the agreement reached at the top leadership level.

Deputy General Secretary Pun has also demanded the Congress leadership to review the anarchy and apolitical tendencies within them. He said that the Congress’s betrayal in Koshi will be discussed in the power alliance meeting.

In the National Assembly elections held on Thursday, the ruling coalition nominated Congress LLeader Krishna Prasad Sitaula and Maoist Champadevi Karki as candidates. Although Sitaula won, Karki lost to UML’s Rukmini Koirala.

Nepal Rastra Bank has taken action against Global IME Bank, Prabhu Bank, Himalayan Bank, Muktinath Bikas Bank, Garima Bikas Bank and Reliance Finance for violating the rules of the Central Bank in the second quarter of the current financial year.

The central bank has directed these institutions to refund any amounts collected from customers that contravene established rules. Specifically, Global IME Bank is instructed to return funds to customers, as it allegedly charged premiums exceeding limits set in point No. 3(8) of the Integrated Directive-2079, a breach of NRB’s directives.

Prabhu Bank faces actions for its failure in classifying loans and maintaining systems to mitigate loan losses. Himalayan Bank is penalized for inaccurately calculating its capital adequacy ratio. The bank reportedly did not adhere to the central bank’s guidelines in deducting certain amounts from the primary capital and understated its risk-weighted assets, leading to a misrepresented higher capital adequacy ratio.

Former US President Trump been charged of $83.3m for defamation & sexual assault

A New York jury has decided Donald Trump should pay $83.3m for defaming columnist E Jean Carroll in 2019 while he was US president.

The penalty in the civil trial is made up of $18.3m for compensatory damages and $65m in punitive damages. The compensatory damages are meant to account for the harm that the jury found his comments had done to her reputation and emotional wellbeing. It took the jury of seven men and two women less than three hours to reach a verdict .

Mr Trump was found in a previous civil case to have defamed Ms Carroll and sexually assaulted her in the 1990s.

Mr. Trump, who looks likely to be the Republican candidate in November’s presidential election, also faces four criminal cases for a total of 91 felony counts. He is the first president in US history to be charged with a crime, but has pleaded not guilty and denied all the charges.

Meanwhile, Trump said, “I fully disagree with both verdicts and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party.

He also said,”Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon. They have taken away all First Amendment Rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”

China reveals British national sentenced to jail for spying

A British national was sentenced to five years in jail for spying in 2022, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mofa) has now revealed.

The defendant – named as Ian J Stones – committed the “crime of illegally obtaining intelligence for overseas actors”, a Mofa spokesman said.

The spokesman added that he had appealed against the sentencing but the case was upheld last September.

This was only revealed in a Mofa briefing on Friday.

According to an article by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Stones worked in China for four decades with big US firms like General Motors and Pfizer and is believed to be aged around 70.

He set up a Beijing-based investment management consulting firm some 15 years ago, said the WSJ, citing corporate records, online profiles and people who know him.

Mofa spokesman Wang Wenbin said the court had “tried the case strictly in accordance with the law”, adding that Beijing had “fully guaranteed the various legitimate rights” and arranged for British officials to visit him and attend his trial.

Stones’ daughter told the WSJ that embassy officials and one family member were permitted to witness one hearing but not the actual trial, adding that none of them had been permitted to see any of the legal documents related to the case.

She also claimed her father was healthy at the beginning of his detention but had received “inconsistent medical care and poor nutrition leading to severe and life-threatening injuries”.

Ms Stones said British Embassy staff have been able to visit Stones every four to six weeks to check on him, but that there have been long periods where they received no news and were not permitted any consular visits.

In a statement, Mr Wang added that Stones was accused of “being bribed into providing intelligence by external forces” .

“The judicial organs strictly promote the handling of cases in accordance with the law, safeguarding the rights and legitimate interests of both Chinese nationals and foreigners,” he said.

This latest reveal comes as China increasingly publicises cases of alleged espionage by Western countries.

Beijing has also launched public campaigns to raise awareness of foreign spying and has been calling on people to report any suspicious activity.

Earlier this month, Chinese authorities said they had detained an individual alleged to be spying for Britain’s foreign intelligence service, MI6.BBC

Death penalty using ‘nitrogen gas’ for the first time in US

The US state of Alabama has executed 58-year-old Kenneth Eugene Smith, who was convicted of murder, by using nitrogen gas. The BBC has mentioned that nitrogen gas was used for the first time in the United States during executions. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Smith is the first person in the world to be executed using pure nitrogen gas.

Smith was sentenced to death after losing appeals to the Supreme Court and the Federal Court of Appeals, arguing that the death penalty was cruel and unusual punishment. Attempts to execute him by lethal injection in 2022 failed.

Smith was convicted in 1989 for the murder of Elizabeth Sennett, the wife of a preacher.

Alabama and two other US states have approved the use of nitrogen hypoxia as an alternative method after lethal injections have become increasingly difficult to find. Under that policy, death penalty was given for the first time using nitrogen. In different states of America, the death penalty is given by lethal injection.

Breathing only pure nitrogen gas deprives the brain of oxygen, a process known as nitrogen hypoxia. Breathing nitrogen without oxygen causes body cells to break down and die.According to prison officials, pure nitrogen gas was circulated over Smith’s face with a mask.

Before being executed, Smith said: ‘Tonight Alabama takes humanity a step back, thank you for supporting me. Love everyone’. According to eyewitnesses to the incident, Smith was agitated for two to four minutes and breathing heavily for about five minutes before being pronounced dead.

The Attorney General of Alabama, Steve Marshall, refuted the comments in the media saying that nitrogen use is scary and said that it has been proven to be an effective and humane method of execution.

UK to loan back Ghana’s looted ‘crown jewels’

The UK is sending some of Ghana’s “crown jewels” back home, 150 years after looting them from the court of the Asante king.

A gold peace pipe is among 32 items returning under long-term loan deals according to BBC.The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) is lending 17 pieces and 15 are from the British Museum.Ghana’s chief negotiator said he hoped for “a new sense of cultural co-operation” after generations of anger.

Some national museums in the UK – including the V&A and the British Museum – are banned by law from permanently giving back contested items in their collections, and loan deals such as this are seen as a way to allow objects to return to their countries of origin. But some countries laying claim to disputed artefacts fear that loans may be used to imply they accept the UK’s ownership.

The items to be loaned, most of which were taken during 19th-Century wars between the British and the Asante, include a sword of state and gold badges worn by officials charged with cleansing the soul of the king.

Russia demands UN Security Council meeting in response to Belgorod airstrike

Ministry of Labour released the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights

Kathmandu – The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security has released a national action plan on business and human rights to promote decent labor through the implementation of workers’ rights.

Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security Sharatsingh Bhandari said that the action plan for the implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights has been created and the issues of the Guiding Principles are mainly included in the action plan.

Subjects included in the existing constitutional and legal system, long-term and periodic plans, human rights conventions approved by Nepal, International Labor Organization conventions, national and regional policies of the Government of Nepal, subjects included in the fifth national action plan on human rights, sustainable development goals and upgrading in developing countries. Related activities have been included in the action plan,’ he said.

The action plan includes the activities related to the observance of human rights, the prevention of the impact of commercial activities on human rights. The right to an adequate standard of living, fair and favorable working conditions, the right to water and sanitation, the right to education, the right to access to information, the right to development, the rights of workers, the rights of consumers, the rights of women and children, the rights of foreign workers, the rights of environmental and indigenous peoples, gender Issues related to equality and rights against caste discrimination and the rights of minority communities have also been included in the action plan, he said.

More than five dozen countries in the world have adopted the concept of responsible and accountable business and have formulated and implemented a national action plan on the implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

In 1977, the International Labor Organization (ILO) also issued principles on multinational enterprise and social policy through tripartite discussions between the government, entrepreneurs and workers. As interest in human rights in the commercial sector increased rapidly, the United Nations launched a campaign on the responsibility of the commercial sector for the respect and observance of human rights in 2000. After that, the concept that businessmen should not be portrayed as human rights violators but should always be responsible for the respect and assurance of human rights has been advancing. In this context, in 2011, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Labor Secretary Kewal Prasad Bhandari said that due to the successful and effective implementation of the national plan, in case of violation of human rights, remedies and compensation will be easily obtained through judicial and non-judicial mechanisms. This ensures policy coherence between the government and the private sector in relation to business and human rights. At least 20 dead, dozens missing in Yunnan landslide

The death toll from a landslide in China’s Yunnan province has risen to 20, while 24 people remain missing.

The landslide in Zhaotong occurred at 05:51 local time (21:51 GMT) on Monday, trapping dozens of people.

Rescuers are racing against time and working through sub-zero temperatures to find those still missing, state news agency Xinhua said.

Preliminary investigations show the landslide resulted from a collapse in a steep cliff, it reported.

The collapsed mass measured approximately 100m (328ft) in width, 60m in height, with an average thickness of around 6m, Xinhua said, citing city authorities.

More than 500 people were evacuated from their homes and nearly 1,000 rescue workers dispatched to the site. President Xi Jinping has ordered an “all-out” rescue in the area, while Chinese vice-premier Zhang Guoqing reportedly led a group to the site to guide rescue operations.

“Search and rescue efforts persisted through the night,” firefighter Li Shenglong told state news outlet Xinhua.

One of the villagers told local media that most of the residents were either elderly or children. Another resident told local news outlet Jimu News that the landslide happened while many people were still asleep on Monday morning.

“It was very loud, and there was also a shake, it felt like a big earthquake,” she said.

Video clips shared on social media showed rescuers walking on piles of rubble against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains. Personal belongings are seen scattered among the collapsed masonry.

The remote, mountainous region in southwest China is prone to landslides. In January 2013, at least 18 people were killed in a landslide in the same county.

Separately, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Wushi county in China’s Xinjiang at about 02:00 local time on Tuesday. State broadcaster CCTV said no casualties have been reported, but some homes have been damaged and some areas had their power supplies cut.BBC

Scott Morrison: Former Australian prime minister to quit politics

Australia’s former Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced he will quit parliament to join the private sector.

Mr Morrison, a conservative who was first elected in 2007, was the country’s leader from 2018 to 2022.He oversaw Australia’s pandemic response, the Aukus defence pact, and was embroiled in a historic scandal for secretly appointing himself to several ministerial positions while PM.

“The time has come for me to return to private life,” he said on Tuesday.

In a statement Mr Morrison, 55, said he would now take on “strategic advisory roles” across Asia to focus on security matters in the Indo-Pacific.A devout Christian, he said he was “looking forward to being more active” in his church and spending time with his family.

Mr Morrison’s retirement has long been expected following a shattering election loss to Labor’s Anthony Albanese in 2022, which left the Liberal-National coalition with its lowest ever number of seats.Australia’s reputation as a climate laggard was a major factor in his government’s demise – with voters favouring candidates committed to more ambitious emissions cuts.

Mr Morrison’s initial response to Covid – which included border closures, lockdowns and test and trace protocols – is credited with helping to contain early outbreaks, although a delayed vaccine rollout later drew criticism.

During his time in office, the prime minister had a particularly rocky relationship with China, Australia’s largest trading partner.

His government led calls for an international investigation into the origins of Covid, prompting a tit-for-tat trade dispute and a years-long diplomatic freeze.

In a strategic pivot, Mr Morrison instead focused on bolstering regional security alliances, helping to set up the Quad partnership with India, Japan and the US, and signing the Aukus nuclear submarine deal with the UK and US.

But public support for him had begun deteriorating rapidly following his decision to holiday in Hawaii during Australia’s deadly 2019-2020 bushfires.Later, he apologised after being widely criticised for his initial muted response to a string of sexual misconduct allegations which rocked parliament. After his 2022 election defeat – described by an internal review as the “most serious” loss in coalition history – Mr Morrison returned to the opposition backbench. He became the first former prime minister to be censured by parliament – over secret powers he had given himself during the pandemic.

Mr Morrison said his decision to make himself the joint minister for health, finance, treasury, and home affairs while leader had been in keeping with the “extraordinary times” the country was facing.Ultimately, an investigation found his appointments were legal, and that he used his extra powers only once.Mr Morrison first garnered national attention in 2013 when he was appointed to cabinet as immigration minister and oversaw Operation Sovereign Borders – which hardened Australia’s controversial asylum seeker policies. He then served as social services minister and treasurer, before succeeding Malcolm Turnbull as Liberal Party leader and prime minister.

Mr Morrison famously defied polls to win the 2019 federal election, having pitched himself to voters as an everyday family man the nation could trust, and adopting the nickname “ScoMo”.After a decade of political leadership challenges in both major parties which upended governments, he became the first prime minister to serve a full term since John Howard in 2007.

US and UK launch fresh strikes on Houthis in Yemen

The US and UK have conducted a fresh series of joint air strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

The Pentagon said Monday’s strikes hit eight targets, including an underground storage site and Houthi missile and surveillance capability.

The Iran-backed Houthis have been targeting ships they say are linked to Israel and the West that travel through the important Red Sea trade route.

The US and UK said they were trying to protect the “free flow of commerce”.

A joint statement issued by the Pentagon confirmed “an additional round of proportionate and necessary strikes” against the Houthis.

The statement added: “Our aim remains to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea, but let us reiterate our warning to Houthi leadership: we will not hesitate to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world’s most critical waterways in the face of continued threats.”

This is the eighth strike by the US against Houthi targets in Yemen. It is the second joint operation with the UK, after joint strikes were carried out on 11 January.

The joint statement said the strikes were carried out with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands.

US fighter jets from the carrier USS Eisenhower were involved in Monday’s strikes.

Four RAF Typhoons, supported by a pair of Voyager tankers, joined the US forces, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.

UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps described the strikes as “self defence” against the Houthis’ “intolerable attacks” on merchant shipping.

It is understood that neither UK Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle nor opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer were briefed in advance about the new strikes.

Indian PM Modi inaugurates Hindu temple Ram mandir

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a grand temple to Hindu god Ram in Ayodhya.

The temple replaces a 16th-Century mosque torn down by Hindu followers in 1992, sparking riots in which nearly 2,000 people died.

Some of the Hindu seers and most of the opposition boycotted it, saying Mr Modi was using it for political gain.General elections are due in India in the next few months and Mr Modi’s political rivals say the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be seeking votes in the temple’s name in a country where 80% of the population is Hindu.

Critics have also accused the government of exploiting a religious celebration in a country which – according to its constitution – is secular. For Muslims, India’s biggest minority, the event evoked fear and painful memories, members of the community in Ayodhya told in the run-up to Monday’s ceremony.

The temple has been constructed at a cost of $217m (£170m), funded from private donations. Only the ground floor was opened – the rest is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The construction work is part of a revamp for the city, estimated to cost more than $3bn.

Hindu devotees chant religious slogans as they watch the inauguration of the Hindu Lord Ram temple on a big screen.January 22, 2024

The building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya fulfils a decades-long Hindu nationalist pledge. Many Hindus believe the Babri mosque was built by Muslim invaders on the ruins of a temple where the Hindu god was born. The movement to build the temple helped propel the BJP into political prominence in the 1990s.
In 2019, the Supreme Court gave the disputed land to Hindus after a protracted legal battle followed the mosque’s demolition. Muslims were given a plot outside the city for a mosque but have yet to build one.

Israel offers to stop hostilities in Gaza for 2 months in exchange for release of hostages

Israel offered Hamas to stop the hostilities in the Gaza Strip for two months under the condition of release of all Israeli hostages, Axios reported, noting that the offer was made via Qatari and Egyptian intermediaries.

According to unnamed Israeli officials, the offer comprises a “multi-stage deal, which includes the release of all hostages held in Gaza.” The report underscored that the offer does not imply the end of the war. According to the Israeli side, Hamas currently holds over 130 hostages.

The report says that Israeli officials expect an answer from Hamas, but remain optimistic about achieving progress in the following days. The first stage of the deal implies the release of women, men aged above 60 and hostages in severe conditions. The following stages will include the release of servicemen, men aged under 60 and the handover bodies of deceased hostages. In exchange, Israel will release detained Palestinians.

The Jewish state also will relocate some forces, with withdraw from the main settlements in the Gaza Strip and will allow gradual return of Palestinian civilians to some areas.

Axios underscores that representatives of Qatar and Egypt have been trying to overcome the disagreements between the fighting sides for weeks in order to achieve a deal. US officials told Axios reporters that the achievement of such deal is probably the only way that will lead to a ceasefire in Gaza.
