US to deploy nuclear weapons to UK

The United States is planning to deploy nuclear weapons to the UK for the first time in 15 years, The Telegraph reported, citing Pentagon documents. However, US defense official had neither confirmed nor denied the reports.

The report comes amid heightened tensions between NATO and Russia over the Ukraine conflict, and calls from some Western politicians to prepare for a potential armed clash with Moscow.

The British newspaper cited procurement contracts for a new facility at the Royal Air Force station at Lakenheath in Suffolk, which point to Washington’s intention to bring nuclear weapons to the base. RAF Lakenheath is expected to house B61-12 bombs that are three times more powerful than those dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, the Telegraph said. The US sent F-35 nuclear-capable fighters to the base last year.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said last year that Moscow would be compelled to enact “compensatory countermeasures” if American nuclear warheads were to return to Britain. Russia has accused the West of stoking tensions in Europe and maintains that the eastward expansion of NATO is one of the root causes of the Ukraine conflict.

High-ranking European officials, including German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, have spoken of the need to brace for a potential war with Russia. Last week the chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, urged the bloc to be “readier across the whole spectrum” for direct confrontation.

The head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergey Naryshkin, dismissed the claims that Moscow was planning an offensive against NATO as “information warfare” aimed at justifying “hybrid aggression.”

US to send long-range rockets to Ukraine

President Biden has announced to send more advanced rocket system in Ukraine to help defend itself.Mr Biden said the lethal aid would strengthen Kyiv’s negotiating position against Russia and make a diplomatic solution more likely.

The weapons will help to strike enemy forces more precisely from a longer distance.New weaponry will include the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).The systems can launch multiple precision-guided missiles at targets as far as 70km (45 miles) away – far further than the artillery that Ukraine currently has.
Helicopters, anti-tank weapons, tactical vehicles and spare parts are to be included in what will be the 11th package of military aid approved by the US for Ukraine since the invasion began in February.

Previously Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the West of “pumping up the Ukrainian nationalists with weapons” and said that any cargo of arms bound for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Moscow. The ministry has said that Nato countries are “playing with fire” by sending weapons to Ukraine.

Russia cuts off gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria

Russia’s state-owned energy company Gazprom has said it will cut off Russian gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria, two countries that have been supporting and providing military aid to Ukraine.

Russia has said it has cut off gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria because of their continued military support to Ukraine and its reluctance to pay in rubles.

Russia’s move has been opposed by most European nations since the Kremlin proposed that Russian enemies pay in rubles. However, in response to the economic sanctions imposed on Russia, Russia demanded that the payment to be made in Russian rubles in every trade with Russia.

Oil and gas prices in the United States and European countries have risen to 40-year highs since Russia cut off supplies.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson banned from entering Russia

Russia has banned top diplomats, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, from entering Russia.

Britain has strongly opposed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Britain has also been helping Ukraine fight Russia.

Various countries have expelled Russian diplomats, accusing Russia of doing wrong by invading Ukraine. Russia has announced that it will not allow high-ranking British officials to enter Russia, as more and more countries are expelling Russian officials.

Russia has barred top officials, including Britain’s foreign secretary and defense minister, from entering Russia.

Russia withdraws troops from Ukraine

Russia says it has begun withdrawing more tanks and other armored vehicles from areas near the Ukrainian border.

Another military train carrying personnel and military equipment belonging to the Tank Army units of the Western Military District returned to its permanent bases in the Nizhny Novgorod region after completing scheduled exercises, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

It also said it had withdrawn 10 warplanes from Moscow (the Crimean peninsula).
