50 defendants in gold smuggling case: 302 kg of gold smuggled

Kathmandu- CIB is submitting the investigation report on gold smuggling to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Kathmandu today. In a press conference held before submitting the gold smuggling investigation report to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, CIB has informed that they had made 50 defendants in the gold smuggling case and concluded that 302.62 kg of gold was smuggled by hiding it in brake pad. CIB concluded that 302.62 kg more gold was smuggled after checking the weight of the brake pad.

According to the CIB, out of the 50 accused in the gold smuggling case, 32 have been arrested so far and 18 are at large. 23 Nepalese and 9 foreign nationals are among the arrested. 14 foreigners and 4 Nepalese are among the fugitives.

The CIB has given an opinion to file a case against the accused in organized crime, gold theft and other offenses under the NRB Act. Earlier, the amount of gold that was said to be 155 kg with brake pad weighed 60 kg, 716 grams only after being melt.

The government is directly involved in gold smuggling

CPN-UML whip Mahesh Bartaula has accused the government of direct participation in the activities of importing gold from China into Nepal and exporting it elsewhere.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament House on Monday, he also said that the government is not in favor of forming a high-level inquiry committee in fear of high-ranking figures in the government.

Bartaula said that the government is trying to defame the country by making Nepal a transit point for gold smuggling.

3 people arrested with 175gm gold from Tribhuvan International Airport

The police arrested three people who arrived in Kathmandu from Dubai on Saturday with about 175gm of gold in a Himalayan Airlines flight.

The police stationed at Tribhuvan International Airport customs arrested Suman Magar of Madhyapur Thimi, Bimala Darzi of Jhapa and Sarjan Rayamazhi of Butwal along with gold during investigation.

During the interrogation, it was discovered that the gold did not belong to them and they were only used as porters.However, Police used them as a bait and was successful to arrest Suren Shrestha of Ramechhap who came to collect the gold .

Home Minister’s PSO arrested on charges of setting up gold smuggling

Home Minister Balkrishna Khan’s PSO (Personal Security Officer) Senior Deputy Inspector Tank Karki has been dragged to the police headquarters for investigation after allegations of setting up gold smuggling.

The police head office has informed that he has been removed from responsibility and an investigation has been started and if the truth is found, action will be taken accordingly.

The inspectorate under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police has formed a committee and proceeded with the investigation.

It is alleged that Karki arranges the delivery of smuggled gold from Dubai to the destination and he takes money for this.
