US will support Taiwan’s self-defence: Harris

Criticizing China’s behaviour in the Asia-Pacific region, US Vice President Kamala Harris has said that the US administration will further develop its relationship with Taiwan.

Speaking to US sailors aboard a US warship in Japan, Harris also accused Beijing of undermining key elements of the international rules-based order. She criticized China for challenging the freedom of the seas and coercively threatening its neighbours with a show of military power during US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei.

The US has said it supports Taiwan’s self-defence and will deepen ties with the self-governing island.

Two US warships sail through the Taiwan strait

The US Navy has announced that the two US warships are passing through the Taiwan Strait.

Washington has said that the two guided-missile cruisers – the USS Antietam and the USS Chancellorsville – are the commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and are demonstrating freedom of navigation through international waters.

Meanwhile, Beijing said such provocative actions are being monitored maintaining a high alert and is ready to defeat any provocation.

Tensions between Taiwan and China have increased following a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan earlier this month.
