Twitter bans seven embassy accounts

Twitter has “suspended” the accounts of seven Serbian embassies and consulates in the US, Belgrade’s Foreign Ministry said.

Serbia has asked Twitter to unblock the accounts, saying such censorship is unacceptable in a European democracy that supports freedom of expression.

Serbia’s foreign ministry said the accounts of embassies in Armenia, Ghana, Iran, Indonesia, Kuwait, Nigeria and Zimbabwe were “suspended”. Twitter said it did so without any explanation or prior notice of a possible violation of the social network’s rules.

The accounts of 16 diplomats, including 13 MPs from the ruling Progressive Party, were also closed without explanation last week, and Twitter reportedly targeted Serbian accounts for suspension.
