Cabinet of non-MPs: Swearing in of new ministers on Monday

TheCPN-Unified Socialist party has included new faces in the cabinet after a long period of internal disputes within the party over the issue of ministerial reshuffle. Recalling the old ministers, the Unified Socialists have appointed Jeevan Ram Shrestha as Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Metmani Chaudhary as Minister for Urban Development, Sher Bahadur Kunwar as Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security, Bhavani Khapung as Minister for Health and Population and Hirachandra KC as Minister of State for Health and Population.
Non-MP Sher Bahadur Kunwar has also been appointed as the Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Security in the reorganized Council of Ministers. According to Nepal’s constitution, a person must be an MP to become a minister. But this is not the first time a non-MP has been made a minister in Prime Minister Deuba’s cabinet. Law Minister Gobind Bandi, who was appointed earlier, is also a non-MP. However, if non-MPs are appointed as ministers, they must seek a vote of confidence from parliament within six months. But with less than six months remaining to go to the election, the government has been sharply criticized for recalling former ministers and appointing non-MPs just to settle the internal issues of politiacal party.

The swearing in of the newly appointed ministers will take place on Monday at 11 am, according to the Office of the President.
