Liz Truss to become Britain’s third female Prime Minister

Liz Truss, leader of the ruling Conservative Party, is set to become the Britain’s third female prime minister.

Truss is set to become the Britain’s next prime minister after defeating rival Rishi Sunak in Monday’s internal vote for the leadership of the Conservative Party. In the election, Truss received 57 per cent of the votes, while her opponent Rishi Sunak received 42 per cent of the votes.

Boris Johnson, who was dragged into a controversy within the party, announced his resignation from the post of Prime Minister last July. Despite replacing Johnson as the leader of the Conservative Party and the Prime Ministership, those dissatisfied with Johnson’s policies have commented that Truss is a product of Johnson’s political legacy and cannot be expected to make any radical changes.

Truss will be the third female Prime Minister in British political history. Margaret Thatcher became the first Prime Minister of Britain from 1975 to 1990, while Theresa May became the second female Prime Minister of Britain from 2016 to 2019.
