Only Nepalese who have gone to work abroad with a work permit can bring 2 mobile phones with them

May 14, Kathmandu – The Customs Department has further explained the decision of the cabinet meeting that , “Nepalese returning from abroad will be allowed to bring 2 mobile phones with them”.

With this decision of the customs department, now only those who have gone for foreign employment with a work permit will be allowed to bring one more mobile phone for free, while students who have gone to study abroad and Nepalese who have gone abroad on a tourist visa will have to pay tax as specified by the customs department if they bring more than one mobile phone.

The Customs Department has stated that any passenger returning from abroad can bring one mobile phone without paying duty and does not have to declare the mobile phone set he or she is using at the customs office.MDMS Registration of such mobile phones can be done online.

According to the Department of Customs, one additional mobile phone, which is allowed to be brought free of charge by the Nepali citizens who have gone to work abroad for at least 6 months with a work permit, must obtain a customs declaration form and based on the same declaration form, the phone can be registered in the MDMS.

However, according to the Customs Department, customs duty will be charged on the second phone brought by those who have returned from abroad on a tourist visa and who have returned from studying abroad, and after completing the customs process of the second phone, they will receive a notification letter and on the basis of the declaration letter those phone can be registered in MDMS.

The Customs Department also said that if the mobile phone brought from abroad is not registered in MDMS within 15 days of using the SIM of the Nepali mobile service provider, the mobile phone will not work in Nepal.
