Myanmar’s military court has sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to three more years in prison for election fraud.

Suu Kyi, the country’s former leader, has now been sentenced to 20 years in prison in 11 cases, while the judgment on other charges is pending. If convicted on all charges, she could be sentenced to nearly 200 years in prison. However, she has denied many of the allegations against her.

Nobel prize winner Suu Kyi, 77, has spent most of her time under house arrest in the capital Naypyitaw, but the new sentence could include hard labour.

The court found her party, the National League for Democracy, guilty of fraud in the November 2020 general election. The army launched a coup last year after alleging there had been massive fraud in the vote

Civil rights and democratic groups have denounced the legal action against Suu Kyi and others as a farce. The United Nations said she is facing a “false trial”. Meanwhile,Myanmar’s military regime says Suu Kyi’s trial is part of a legal process.
