According to Vedic Sanatan religion and culture, every year Hindus celebrate Janai Purnima (Rishi Tarpani), Rakshya bandhan festival on Shravan Shukla Purnima. Today people go to nearby temples and shrines across the country to celebrate the festival. On this day, one goes to a nearby shrine, river, lake or pond, takes a bath and wears a {JANAI-(Janai is a sacred cotton thread worn across the chest by Hindu males who had done Bratabandha) & DORO}sacred thread from Guru Purohit.

People have a religious belief that the sacred thread tied around their wrists provides protection from negative elements. There is also a belief that Guru Brihaspati tied a sacred thread to protect the gods who were being chased by demons in Satya Yuga. It is believed that the sacred rope tied on the wrist today will open the gateway to heaven if tied on the tail of a cow in Cow Tihar.

Yen Baddo Valiraja Danvendra Mahavalas
Tyen Twa Pratibadhnami rakshye ma chal ma chal
Meaning:
I bind you with the same sacred thread( made of raw thread), which bound the great king of the demons, Bali, will protect you forever.

Brahmin and Kshatriya men who have done Bratabandha have a tradition of changing their JANAI on this day. Out of the six threads of the two knots in Janai, the three threads on one knots are Brahma, Bishnu and Maheshwar and the three threads on the other knots are considered to be the yoga of karma, worship and knowledge. This day is also called Rishi Tarpani because people worships eight sages including Arundhati, Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadwaja, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, Vashishta and Agastya.

There is also a tradition that today, sisters wishes for longevity and success of their brothers and tie Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi on the wrists of their brothers. Rakhi is especially important in Terai region of Nepal.

On this day, 9 types of sprouted Legumes(black lentils, soybean, peas, chickpea, fava beans, mung beans, blackeye beans, red kidney beans and broad beans) are boiled and eaten which is called KWATI. There is a religious and Ayurveda classical belief that if you eat kwati , the body’s resistance to disease will increase and the body will remain healthy and strong.
