Martyrs’ Day is being observed in Nepal today in memory of the great martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy in the country. Martyrs’ Day is observed in Nepal every year as a solemn remembrance of the struggle and sacrifices made by the martyrs of Nepal against the autocratic Rana regime for freedom, justice and democratic rule. Among the many who sacrificed their lives, four prominent figures – Shukraraj Shastri, Dharmabhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha – are especially remembered on this day for their unwavering commitment to the democratic movement of Nepal.

While remembering these four martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country, we should not forget the many other martyrs including Lakhan Thapa, Bhakti Thapa, Balabhadra Kunwar and Amar Singh Thapa who sacrificed their lives for the democracy and sovereignty of this country at some point in history.

Shukraraj Shastri (1894 – January 23, 1941)

Shukraraj Shastri was a scholar, philosopher, and social reformer who played a significant role in spreading political consciousness among Nepali citizens. He was one of the pioneers in opposing the oppressive Rana regime and advocating democratic principles. His efforts to educate the public about democracy and governance made him a target of autocratic rulers.

On January 23, 1941 (Magh 10, 1997), he was publicly hanged in Pachali, Kathmandu, on the orders of the then Rana government. His execution marked a turning point in Nepal’s democratic struggle, inspiring many to continue the fight for independence, democracy and sovereignty.

Dharmabhakta Mathema (1909 – January 25, 1941)

Dharmabhakta Mathema was a national hero and a famous sportsman who used his influence to encourage nationalist sentiments against the Rana rulers. He played a significant role in mobilizing the public and spreading awareness about the need for political change in Nepal.

Recognizing his potential threat, the Rana regime arrested him and sentenced him to death. He was hanged on January 25, 1941 (Magh 12, 1997) at Siphal in Kathmandu. His sacrifice has been a source of inspiration for generations of Nepalese who cherish democratic values and freedom.

Dasharath Chand (1916 – January 28, 1941)

Dasarath Chand was a fearless journalist and political activist who worked tirelessly to expose the injustices of the Rana government. Together with his close associates, he sought to establish democracy in Nepal through active political engagement and resistance.

Due to his revolutionary activities, he was arrested and sentenced to death by the Rana rulers. On January 28, 1941 (Magh 14, 1997), he was shot dead at Shobha Bhagwati in Kathmandu. His martyrdom keeps the sacrifices he made for democracy and justice alive.

Gangalal Shrestha (1919 – January 28, 1941)

Gangalal Shrestha was a young and passionate revolutionary who dedicated his life to the democratic movement. From a young age, he actively opposed the authoritarian rule of the Ranas and worked closely with others to promote freedom and equality in Nepal.

He was arrested along with Dashrath Chand and sentenced to death for his involvement in anti-Rana activities. He too was shot dead at Shobha Bhagwati in Kathmandu on January 28, 1941. His courage and determination have left an indelible mark on Nepal’s history.

Martyr’s Day is celebrated with great respect and devotion throughout Nepal. The government, political leaders, civil society, and the general public pay tribute to these great martyrs by holding rallies, programs, and laying wreaths at their statues and memorials. The primary site of remembrance is the Shaheed Gate in Kathmandu, where the statues of these four martyrs stand as a symbol of their sacrifice.

Their sacrifices ultimately paved the way for Nepal to transform from an autocracy to a democratic nation. Martyrs’ Day celebrations serve as a constant reminder of the value of freedom and the responsibility of every citizen to uphold democratic values. Schools, colleges, and government institutions often organize special programs, discussions, and seminars to educate the younger generation about the history of Nepal’s democratic struggle.

Celebrating Martyrs’ Day is not just about paying tribute; it is also about advancing the spirit of patriotism, justice, and equality. Nepal’s progress towards a democratic system has been fraught with difficulties, but the foundation laid by these martyrs continues to inspire Nepali citizens to strive for a more just and equitable society.

The sacrifices of Shukraraj Shastri, Dharmabhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand, and Gangalal Shrestha have become a source of inspiration for all Nepalese. Their unwavering dedication to justice and democracy changed the course of Nepali history. As we celebrate Martyrs’ Day, it is our duty today to honor their legacy by protecting the democratic rights and freedoms they fought so hard to achieve. The true tribute to these great martyrs is to uphold their values and ensure that Nepal continues to progress as a democratic nation free from oppression and injustice.

Despite the challenges Nepal faces in governance, the principles fought for by these martyrs are still relevant today. The self-respect and sovereign Nepal shown by the martyrs is the duty of the common Nepali citizen to move forward on the path of nation-building with awareness that every citizen should do something for the country from their own area for the right to live independently on the path of democratic and sovereign Nepal.
